About Logan Jacobson Mackensen

About Us

Logan Jacobson Mackensen, J.D., is a family law attorney and court-approved mediator practicing in Birmingham, Michigan.

Mackensen Law, PLLC is a single-attorney practice handling divorce and family law, custody and parenting time, premarital agreements, support, and mediation for clients across Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, Washtenaw, Livingston, Monroe, Ingham, and Genesee Counties.

Three elements distinguish the background from a conventional family law résumé:

Background and Legal Career

Mackensen grew up in Metro Detroit and entered law through criminal defense. After earning her Juris Doctorate and gaining admission to the California Bar, she served as a full-time trial attorney with the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office, handling matters from early case assessment through negotiated resolution and, in contested cases, through jury verdict.

She returned to Michigan in 2010. In the years that followed, she managed close to 10,000 residential units, a role that placed her on the client side of active litigation rather than the counsel side.

Mackensen credits that period with shaping how she frames cost, timeline, and settlement-value conversations during an initial consultation.

The practice now combines client representation with neutral work as a court-approved mediator and as a court-appointed coordinator.

Education and Credentials

Credential Institution Year
Juris Doctorate Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law 2005
B.A., magna cum laude Wayne State University 2003
Finance Certificate Walsh College 2013

Undergraduate study began at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before Mackensen completed the degree at Wayne State. She practices law in Michigan.

She was first admitted in California at the start of her career with the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office, and she has also been admitted in Ohio.

Each jurisdiction's licensing authority maintains public records of current standing, and Michigan status is verifiable through the State Bar of Michigan directory.

The Walsh College finance certificate carries practical weight in family law.

Matters that call for formal valuation, forensic accounting, or tax analysis still go to the appropriate specialists.

Marital estates holding a closely held business, a pension subject to division, or commingled premarital assets turn on financial documents, and Mackensen reads valuations, statements, and plan documents directly rather than through an intermediary.

Mediation Credentials and Court Rosters

Mackensen is approved in both general civil mediation and domestic relations mediation… the dual approval reflects two completed qualification tracks rather than one broader credential.

Under State Court Administrative Office requirements, each track independently demands a training program approved by the State Court Administrator, observation of two mediations conducted by an approved mediator in that discipline, one mediation carried to completion under supervision, and eight hours of advanced training every two years to maintain standing. Published mediator training standards govern which programs qualify.

Michigan circuit courts approve mediators at the local court level, making roster participation specific to both the court and mediation discipline.

Logan Jacobson Mackensen is an approved civil mediator and an approved domestic relations mediator in Oakland County, an approved domestic relations mediator in Genesee County, and an approved domestic mediator in Ingham County.

Her court-approved mediator credentials span both civil and domestic relations matters across multiple Michigan circuit courts.

Dual qualification matters where a marital estate contains a general civil question — a business interest, a contract dispute, a property claim — because Mackensen is qualified to mediate those issues herself.

Whether a particular matter also calls for additional neutrals or outside valuation, tax, or accounting specialists depends on its scope and the court’s direction. Mediated terms are memorialized into a Judgment of Divorce or a court Order, which is the enforceable instrument.

Mackensen also serves as a volunteer mediator at Oakland Mediation Center, taking cases without fee alongside the firm’s paid mediation caseload.

Parenting Time Coordination

Logan Jacobson Mackensen serves as a court-appointed Parenting Time Coordinator, helping parents implement parenting time arrangements and resolve the practical disputes that can arise after a parenting plan is in place.

Her work can involve disagreements over transportation, holiday schedules, daily routines, health care, school matters, and adjustments to parenting schedules. Under MCL 722.27c, the appointment requires the consent of both parents and the coordinator.

Mackensen provides written recommendations within the scope of the appointment while helping parents work through issues that might otherwise become recurring sources of conflict.

That experience directly informs her family law practice. Michigan custody decisions are governed by the best-interest factors in MCL 722.23, but effective parenting plans also require careful attention to the practical details of how families actually operate.

By working with other attorneys’ parenting plans after they are put into practice, Mackensen sees firsthand which provisions work, where ambiguity creates conflict, and which details can prevent repeated disputes. She brings that perspective to the parenting plans she drafts for her own clients.

Professional Memberships

Mackensen Law participates in the Oakland County Bar Association and the Macomb County Bar Association, covering the practice’s principal geography.

Mediation and out-of-court resolution are represented through the Michigan Inter-Professional Association, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, and the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan.

Four of the six concentrate on resolution outside the courtroom, consistent with a practice built around mediation and collaborative divorce.

Practice Scope and Client Handling

Mackensen Law handles only family law matters —divorce, custody and parenting time, premarital and postnuptial agreements, spousal and child support, separate maintenance, annulment, guardianship, personal protection orders, and mediation. The practice does not handle criminal defense, personal injury, or business litigation, and refers those matters out.

Every file stays with Mackensen from consultation through final judgment. The practice does not delegate hearings, drafting, negotiation, or client communication to associates, paralegals, or assistants because it employs none. That structure comes with a capacity constraint: a solo practice handles fewer matters simultaneously than a multi-attorney firm, and intake is limited accordingly.

The office is at 600 S Adams, Suite 300, Birmingham, Michigan 48009, in central Oakland County, and can be reached at (248) 600-7700 or logan@mackensenlaw.com.

Hours run Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with evening and weekend appointments by arrangement.

Separation decisions rarely wait. Mackensen Law offers Michigan families a confidential first conversation with Logan Mackensen at no cost — schedule directly.
